Life in transit
Ah the experience of travel, its a gift that cannot be measured in the worth that it gives the individual that undertakes in a journey into the unknown. Quite beautifully, it taps into your core root and as the miles and the hours pass you learn who you are(or aren’t) and where your place is in this world(at least as much as you could know at your current place) . To travel is to be privileged, but not privileged of money, but privileged just know no matter the income you have the ability to go out of your comfort zone and experience life through a different lens. The people you meet in transit become your new family, your new friends, one that you enjoy and depart with in a matter of hours or days.
Life in transit, they say that life is “the journey more so than the destination” and I couldn’t agree more.
Returning home to a apartment that isn’t my own anymore with the few stuff(a insignificant word for meaningless things I’ve acquired)I have packed away in a 5×5 box in storage-quickly did I realize that I was still on the trip that I started months ago when I handed the keys to my place over to a person I just met a month prior to it. In transit you learn the real value of things, of course if you get into situations where you end up sleeping in park benches with no money in a land where no one speaks the same language as you. But it gives you great moxie, and skills with human communication that you can’t get in the towns and cities that are familiar to you. Your forced helplessly into the hands of other people who sometimes hold the key to you getting to where you need to go, so much gets lost in translation.
But that is essentially the gift, if you choose to acknowledge it or not.
On a bus to the siwa oasis I shared a long conversation with a family of Berbers where neither party knew what the other was saying, but we communicated through hand gestures and drawings-only to have everyone laughing together at our inability to communicate with each other.
Walking down a street in morocco I pass by 2 rather funky dressed men carrying a black plastic bag, we catch eyes and as soon as we acknowledge each others existence I stop from the group and walk back to say hello.
“We are from Liberia, stuck in tangier and trying to find our way back home.”
“I wish you could help, but I’m trying to find my way home too, Maybe next year I’ll come to Liberia.”
“No problem, I’ll see you in liberia next year then. “
I’ve heard people say that in travel you realize how small the world actually is, but I do strongly disagree, The world is very big and Although we have our differences we are all the same. And this common truth is known around in places one wouldn’t believe to have friends, instead of enemies.
